Get started
Sign in, add your accounts, pick categories and assign your money for the first time.
You need about 15 minutes. Have the current balance of each account ready, for example from your banking app. A new budget shows these steps on the Budget page too.
1. Sign in
- Go to the home page and select Sign in.
- Type your email address and select Email me a sign-in link.
- Open the email and select Sign in. The link works once, for 10 minutes. On the page that opens, select Sign in again.
- To sign in faster next time, select Add a passkey and follow the steps of your device. Or select Not now.
The app opens the Budget page. Your first sign-in makes a new, empty profile. With a passkey, select Sign in with a passkey on the sign-in page and use your fingerprint, face or screen lock.
2. Add an account
Start with the account that you spend from most.
- On the Budget page, select Add account.
- In Account name, type a name, for example Everyday account.
- In Currency, select the currency of the account.
- Select Create account. The opening balance form opens.
- In Starting date, enter the day that you start your budget from.
- In Balance on that date, type what the account held on that day. Use a dot for decimals, for example 1250.50.
- Select Save opening balance.
The opening balance goes into the account's Ready to budget.
To add more accounts, go to Accounts and select Add account. Do the same steps for each account. Add one account for each currency that a bank holds for you.
3. Pick your categories
After you add your first account, the Budget page shows Pick your categories.
- To see the ready-made list, select Preview the categories.
- To use it, select Create these categories. The app makes about 25 categories in groups such as Home, Food and Transport.
- To make your own categories, select Start from scratch. Then select Add category for each category.
You can rename, move and delete categories later. See Change your categories.
4. Assign your money
Put the money in Ready to budget into categories. Start with the bills that you must pay first.
- On the Budget page, find a category, for example Rent.
- In the Assigned column, select Assign money.
- In From account, select the account that pays for it.
- In Total assigned from this account, type the amount.
- Select Save.
Do this for each category. Look at Ready to budget in the totals table at the top. When it is zero in each currency, you know what all of your money is for.
5. Record what you spend
From now on, add each expense and income to the budget. You can do this in two ways:
- Add each transaction by hand. See Record transactions.
- Import a CSV file from your bank. See Import a bank file.
Once a month, compare each account with your bank statement. See Reconcile an account.
