Questions and answers
Short answers to common questions, such as why Ready to budget is negative.
Why is Ready to budget negative?
An account has more money in categories than it holds. This can happen after you spend without a category, move money out, or record a conversion.
To correct it, do one of these:
- Select Fix Ready to budget. The app takes unspent money back from categories. You see a preview first.
- Type a smaller total for one or more categories from that account.
- Add income that you forgot to record.
Why does the app not show one total for all my money?
Because a total in one currency is not real money. No account holds it, and its value changes with the exchange rate. The app shows each currency separately. If you want a rough total, choose a display currency. See Estimates.
I have euros left. Why can they not cover an overspent category in forints?
Because you cannot pay a forint bill with euros until you change them. Record the conversion first. Then assign the forints that you received. See Change money to another currency.
Why do I see a dash instead of an estimate?
The estimate would add a negative amount in one currency to money in another currency, or a rate is missing. See When you see a dash.
How do I delete a transaction?
Open the transaction with Edit, select Delete this transaction, and then Delete for good. You cannot delete a reconciled transaction, an opening balance or a reconciliation. To remove a whole imported file, undo the import. See Delete a transaction.
What does Undo import remove?
It removes each transaction that the file added, with any changes that you made to them later. It does not change your own transactions that the file matched: they stay cleared. You cannot undo an import after you reconcile its transactions. See Undo an import.
Why are rows Already imported?
An earlier file had the same rows. The app skips them, so you can import files with dates that overlap. If you undo the earlier import, you can import those rows again.
The balance check shows a difference. What do I do?
Read the message. It tells you if the difference is older than the file or comes from the file's dates.
- If it is older, a transaction before the file is missing or wrong. Reconcile the account to find it.
- If it comes from the file, look for a transaction that you entered twice, or one that the file does not have yet.
Can I change the currency of an account?
No. An account has one currency for all of its history. If you opened a new account in another currency, add it as a new account. Move the money with a conversion.
I forgot the opening balance. What do I do?
You can add an opening balance only before the first transaction of an account. After that, reconcile the account with your current balance. The difference becomes an adjustment. See Reconcile an account.
I typed an amount, and the category got less than I expected. Why?
The amount is the total that the account gives the category, not an amount to add. Type the new total. See Assign money to a category.
Can I use the app on my phone?
